NOVA
an open planetary rover

NOVA is a four-wheel, independently steered research rover designed and built in the AstroX Lab for testing planetary autonomy on our lunar-analog testbed. Everything needed to build one — CAD, bill of materials, and build notes — is released here so other labs and student teams can rebuild, modify, and extend it.

  • Mobility4 × swerve modules (independent drive + steer)
  • SuspensionDifferential-bar (rocker) chassis
  • Drive100:1 metal gearmotors, 37D
  • SteeringDynamixel XL430-W250-T
  • ComputeNVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano + Raspberry Pi Pico 2W
  • SensingZED 2i stereo camera, BNO055 IMU
  • Power3S 11.1 V 10 Ah LiPo, Matek PDB
  • Structure3D-printed PLA, 6061 Al plate, 15 mm Al tube

Build guide

Rebuild it in four steps

  1. Order the parts. The bill of materials below lists every purchased component with a supplier link. Most items ship from Amazon, DigiKey, Robotis, and Stereolabs.
  2. Print and machine. Chassis tubs, lids, battery case, Jetson housing, ZED mounts, and swerve-module parts are 3D-printed in PLA; the screw-plate templates and bracket are cut from 6061 aluminum plate. Install the M2.5–M5 heat-set inserts before assembly.
  3. Assemble. Open NOVA_V2_Assembly.SLDASM (from the GitHub repo ↗) in SolidWorks for the full exploded structure: four swerve modules, the differential bar, and the chassis sub-assemblies.
  4. Wire and flash. The Pico 2W drives the Cytron motor drivers and reads the IMU; the Jetson Orin Nano runs perception on the ZED 2i and talks to the Dynamixels through the U2D2 hub. Software release coming soon.
